The student recognition program at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School is a very important aspect of school life. Students K-6 are recognized at the end of each grading period for accomplishments in attendance, academics and responsibility. The awards are presented at a school assembly following each school semester.
Sponsored by Pizza Hut, the Book It! National Reading Incentive Program aims to motivate children in kindergarten through sixth grade to read by rewarding them for their reading accomplishments. The goal is to help children develop a lifelong love of reading. Our school librarian sets monthly reading goals, and when a child meets a monthly reading goal, they are rewarded with a certificate good for a Pizza Hut pizza. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton also has a Book It! contest between classes.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton students participate in an electronic bookshelf reading program. Books are selected each year and displayed in our library. Students read these books and then take a computer recognition test. This program is designed to encourage children to read well-written contemporary literature and we recognize a students progress with quarterly awards.
St. Elizabeth promotes after-school educational programs for our children. One optional after-school activity offered at SEAS is the Chess Club. The fundamentals of chess and the "fun of the game" is taught to students in grades K-6. Classmates play and learn with each other in an after-school setting - with parent and teacher supervision.
Jump Rope for Heart is an educational fundraising program that grades, K-6 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton participate in. Our students jump rope for their healthy hearts and raise money to fight heart diseases and stroke through research and education. All money raised is forwarded to the American Heart and Lung Association.
Each year, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School conducts a paper drive to collect paper products and non-perishable paper items for families in economic need. This past year, paper products were collected and distributed to the Clair House.
To give students an opportunity to bond within the school, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton classes are paired with a class in another grade level as a partner, or “buddy,” class. Younger classes are matched with older classes, so that the “big kids,” who might otherwise be intimidating to the “little kids,” instead become special friends, role models and tutors. Students at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton look forward to activities with their partners.
Students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School use scientific methods to gather and analyze data, interpret their findings and report conclusions in a visual and verbal presentation. The result of this process is a Science Fair Project. Projects selected as winners in the school science fair receive school awards and go on to further present their projects at the school district level.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 5th grade established a partnership with the Anchorage Pioneer Home. Students make regular visits to their “senior friends” at the home. Each student adopts their senior friend for the year and tries to remember them at holidays and other special times.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School participates in the national St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon. This supplemental math program for grades K-6, allows students to obtain sponsors and then complete a Math Fun-book to solve a variety of math problems, puzzles and arithmetic operations. All monies raised from this activity is forwarded to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help treat children in the U.S. and across the world.
Several times a year, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School spirit is promoted with Spirit Day or Theme Day. On Spirit Day, everyone is encouraged to wear school t-shirts or red, white and blue—our school colors. With input from the faculty and our Parent Volunteer Organization, theme days are chosen on selected days throughout the school year. Some of the most popular are Crazy Hair Day and Jean Day. Participation in these special days by both students and our staff is usually very high and helps to join us all closer together.
To celebrate the end-of-winter and the end-of-the-school year, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton students have an annual Track and Field Day. Like traditional field days, this fun day involves all classrooms in outdoor activities. Unlike typical field days, however, all activities are noncompetitive in nature, allowing all students to feel successful. SEAS Parent Volunteer Organization provides our thirsty, hungry athletes a barbeque lunch.
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School yearbook is an annual publication featuring students and events from the current school year. The cover is selected from a design contest in which 6th graders participate. For more information or to contribute photos, contact the school.
